Irish Immigrant Thomas Ellis arrived in the Okanagan in the late 1860s and was the first European settler in the area known today as Penticton. Ellis established himself as a cattle rancher and by the 1890s, his empire spanned from South Okanagan all the way to the Canada-US Border. Today, Ellis Street, named after the cattle baron, runs through the Kelowna Cultural District and ends at the base of Knox Mountain.
